Veranda Candle: Hospitality never smelled so good
by Ashley Biondich
November 08, 2007

The three creators of Veranda Candle bring Southern hospitality to the candle profession. Johns Creek businesswomen Traci McGlashan and Jana Wojenski joined forces with Lauren Taylor of Orange County, Calif., to fill the market void of fragrant candles.

"Often I would purchase a candle for $38 or more, and I had to stand over it to smell it," Wojenski said.

In addition to lasting fragrance, they wanted their candles to be associated with a distinct southern city. They chose to have the city of Johns Creek at its helm. "Our candle proudly identifies Johns Creek, Georgia, on the bottom of each label. It's all about the hospitality," said Wojenski. Priced at about $28, Veranda Candles retain their fragrance for at least 70 hours of use.

Favorite fragrances include "Trust Fund" (a blend bergamot and heirloom roses), "Currant Affair" (red currant) and "Hunter/Jumper" (a combination of finely saddled leather, Spanish moss and sweet grass). Featured holiday scents are "Jacquie O'Lantern" and "All Spruced Up."

Veranda Candles are sold at The Red Hound in Johns Creek, The Pear Tree in Cumming's Vickery Village, My Sister's Gifts in Milton, KaBloom in Duluth, The Country Cottage in Dahlonega, Whippoorwill at The Queen of Hearts Antique Mall in Alpharetta, The Gracious Gift in Sugar Hill and in the Emory Johns Creek Hospital's gift shop in Johns Creek. Making 'Old World' new
by Logan Thomas
November 05, 2007

Walking into The Pear Tree at Vickery Village in Forsyth County is like stepping back through time to view an attic in
"Old World" Europe. And owner Laura Hoover Lamb designed the store to be just that. The Pear Tree is celebrating its one-year anniversary and specializes in vintage gifts as well as distinctive home accents that include quality hand-crafted European and domestic classic gifts. Just in time for Halloween, The Pear Tree will also be selling its "Jacquie O'Lantern", which is a candle created by Johns Creek candle maker and distributor Veranda Candle.

The store has been a dream come true for Lamb, who opened the store on Sept. 9 in 2006."This is something I had never done before," said Lamb, who worked in corporate America for 12 years before making the move as a business owner. "It's been very rewarding and I have been touched by the response from the community. I've been very blessed."

The very "Old World" feel of the store has meant many return customers, Lamb said. "It's not your run of the mill store," she said. "The customers have been very receptive. I'm very grateful for that." Lamb makes an effort to purchase unique items to make her store stand out.

"I try to buy from lines you won't find around here," she said. "I think there's something here for everybody. I spend a lot of time searching for those unique items. I'm very picky in regards to what I put in the store." Lamb said the idea for owning her own store bounced around inside her head while working in corporate America. "I was always inundated with people opening new businesses," she said. "I learned a lot by watching these people. I'd say I worked on the concept for my store for two years before opening it."

During her research, she considered numerous locations such as Buckhead until she accidentally came across Vickery Village. "I'm a big believer in doing your homework," she said. "It wasn't until I spent a year researching that I created a store that was me. I find it very comforting to come to work." Lamb said she has been influenced by her grandmother's boutique near Belfast, Ireland where she spent many summers of her youth.

"Those are some of my best memories," she said. "I still go twice a year." Lamb said she is very appreciative of the people that have visited her store. "I am so grateful for the people who have given us a chance," she said.
